Beamshield Case Study

The unique Platinum Beamshield Plus Easi-Fit unit was supplied to Crest Nicholson at the Kent Music School site in Maidstone. The 347mm thick units were supplied in conjunction with concrete T-beams from CR Longley to achieve a 0.12 U value. The Crest site manager Mr Bert Halley was 'very impressed with the speed of installation', and James Nicholas of Fankis Solutions the Ground work contractor was amazed at how quickly he was able to install the units and in particular the reduction in beam handling.

Insulation for suspended T-beam floors...

Beamshield Plus is the innovative, simple, fast and cost-effective way to create insulated suspended ground floors. Manufactured from high-strength EPS, Beamshield Plus units negate the need for concrete blocks, fitting snugly between and below concrete T beams to provide both the total floor insulation and a formwork on which to lay the structural screed.

Beamshield Plus is available in original white EPS and as Platinum Beamshield Plus, with higher insulation values. Platinum Beamshield is an EPS panel which incorporates a graphite component called Neopor®, manufactured by BASF, to provide significantly improved thermal insulation performance, for example, to achieve higher levels of the Code for Sustainable Homes or just to improve SAP ratings.

The insulation used to produce Platinum Beamshield Plus panels has a thermal resistance up to five times greater than lightweight thermal blocks, eliminating the need for additional insulation. The shape of the panels has been carefully developed to minimise thermal bridging at the T Beams; when installed, Springvale Beamshield Plus panels form an unbroken layer of insulation below the beams.

The system is simple and quick to install and produces a floor with an excellent thermal insulation value.

There are 2 insulation unit size options available: T60 with a shallow flange, suitable for use with 150mm beams, and T80 with a deep flange, for use with 175mm beams. Other beam sizes can also easily be catered for.

Beamshield Plus comprises 4 EPS components: Full insulation units, suitable for 600mm beam centres; half insulation units for reduced beam centres, in the case of higher loadings or for ease of setting out; a starter insulation unit and a unit with extended toes for multiple beam details. Variations in the product can be accommodated, for example, to suit differing T beams and configurations or ventilation systems. Contact our Technical Office for alternative units to meet specific thermal and dimensional requirements.

Extensive testing means that Springvale can offer design solutions for a wide variety of loading applications, supported by full engineering and design services.

Certification

Beamshield Plus and Platinum Beamshield Plus have been awarded BBA certificate 07/4411. The products are manufactured to the requirements of BS EN 13163:2001 and under an ISO 9001:2000 approved quality management system.

Durability

The thermal insulation properties of Springvale Beamshield Plus will remain effective for the life of the building. The cells in the board contain air, ensuring consistent performance throughout the lifetime of the products.

They are dimensionally stable products, which are resistant to attack from bacteria, moulds and fungi, and will not provide nutrient value for insects or vermin. They are also non-toxic and non-irritant.

Building Regulation Requirements

In line with Approved Document L, the limiting U-value for the ground floor is 0.25 W/m2K. However U-values as low as 0.10 W/m2K can be achieved with Platinum Beamshield Plus. To ensure compliance, 'as designed' and 'as built' SAP calculations are required for new dwellings or SBEM calculations for buildings other than dwellings.

Beamshield Plus and Platinum Beamshield Plus can be laid in damp conditions without compromising their performance or longevity.

Fire Performance

When used in a suspended T Beam floor construction a Euroclass B classification can be expected.

Handling and Storage

Packs of Beamshield Plus products are delivered to site wrapped in polythene. Store panels in original packaging, under cover and protected from direct sunlight. Keep boards above ground level and out of contact with solvents and materials containing volatile organic compounds such as coal tar, pitch or creosote. Do not expose to naked flame or other ignition sources during storage or installation.

Services

Do not use Beamshield Plus products in direct contact with PVC – sheathed electrical cables or hot water pipes. Electrical cables should be enclosed in suitable conduit.

Health and Safety

The product is chemically inert and requires no special treatment.

Beamshield Plus products should be described in specification as:

The floor insulation shall be Beamshield Plus/ Platinum Beamshield Plus, manufactured to BS EN 13163:2001 by Springvale EPS Ltd. The insulation system is to be installed according to the manufacturers instructions. Refer to NBS Plus, clause E60/297 (Proprietary Infill Blocks) for further information.

Screeds/Toppings for Beamshield Plus Systems

Extensive testing has been carried out on the composite action of Beamshield Plus systems incorporating steel reinforced concrete and also fibre reinforced concrete screeds. The screed specification is flexible to accommodate a wide variety of floor loadings to suit the design. A typical specification with a designed UDL (Uniformly Distributed Load) of 5kNm2 or point load of 4.5kN is shown as an example, as follows:

Domestic and residential

  • minimum 60mm thick C25/30 concrete reinforced with A142 mesh
  • minimum 60mm thick C25/30 screed* with Fibrin 23 polypropylene fibres at a density of 0.91kg/m3
  • minimum 60mm thick C28/35 self-levelling/ self-compacting concrete with A142 mesh

Communal areas in flats and offices

  • minimum 60mm thick C28/35 self-levelling/ self-compacting screed* with Fibrin PC12 polypropylene fibres at a density of 0.75kg/m3
  • minimum 75mm thick C25/30 or C28/35 self-levelling/self-compacting concrete with a steel mesh sized in accordance with BS 8110-1:1997
