Why EPS?
EPS has been around since 1931 as a useable material and has been used as an insulant for around 50 years. It's a product with a very long life span.
Unlike most insulants, EPS is not just a sheet material but an adaptable & versatile material that can be moulded, cut, scooped and profiled to suit many innovative applications
EPS is widely used in many everyday building situations where its lightweight, strength and thermal insulation characteristics provide cost effective high performance solutions, and is well proven in the most punishing of civil engineering applications – its inherent strength means it can support, for example, road and railway structures with complete ease.
The manufacture of EPS conforms to the most stringent health and safety requirements in Europe.
EPS is the most flexible and cost effective insulation solution because:
- EPS can be moulded
- The blocks of EPS can be sliced into sheets using hot wire cutters
- Intricate shapes can be produced on hot wire CNC machines
- On site final cutting can be achieved using a fine tooth saw
- EPS requires minimal protection on site
- EPS is pre-packed for ease of handling
- EPS an be installed during inclement weather thus avoiding costly site delays
The EPS advantage
The most economical solution
EPS is a considerably lower cost solution than using other insulants to meet the latest Building Regulations Part L for floors, walls and roofs - approximately 30% cheaper than other insulants
Excellent compressive strength
EPS has proven its load bearing capability for over 40 years and can be manufactured to suit load requirements
Contractor friendly
A much easier material to work with on site than other insulants good handling / not fibrous, when being cut on site does not produce harmful dust
Dimensionally stable
Unlike loose-fill or fibrous materials, EPS will not settle over time
Constant performance throughout the life of the building
Unlike some other insulants, the performance of EPS does not deteriorate with age
Environmentally sound
EPS has a zero ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential) as the expanding / blowing agent used in the expansion process is Pentane which does not affect the ozone layer
EPS has a zero GWP (Global Warming Potential) - better than carbon dioxide which has a GWP of 1.
EPS Contains no CFCs, HFCs or HCFCs
It is easily recycled, indeed most EPS products contain recycled material
It's Life Cycle Analysis, results in a good Ecopoint Score from the BRE Environmental Profiles.
EPS products are manufactured without the use of CFCs or HCFCs which could contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer. The high level of insulation provided by EPS insulation panels makes a positive contribution to the reduction in CO2 emissions to the atmosphere by reducing the amount of fossil fuel required to heat buildings. The manufacture of Platinum insulation products is a very effective use of natural resources because the energy used in its production (embodied energy) is saved many times over throughout the life of the buildings in which it is installed. Producing one square metre of Platinum EPS at a thickness of 100mm requires 5 litres of mineral oil. Over a period of 50 years the same board saves over 600 litres of heating oil (source BASF).
Dimensionally stable
Once manufacture is complete the material will not swell or shrink with extremes of temperature or extreme atmospheric conditions.
Constant performance
EPS is a long life material which has a natural decomposition time of around 2000 years
Resistant to water absorption
Even subjected to long term saturation, EPS will maintain its shape, size, structure and physical properties
Can be easily moulded
Enables accurate high volume manufacture of complex shapes for Innovation
